Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms are now being used by people from all over the world. There are many positives about using social media including, staying in contact with friends, learning new things and keeping up to date with the latest news. How people interact with each other on social media can be a positive experience but sometimes it can be a negative experience and cause harm in different ways.
It is really important before we post, comment or reply on social media that we think about how we interact with other people.
Top tips for interacting with others on social media:
- Think before you post, is your comment positive? Is your comment supporting or encouraging other women with disabilities? If you answered no, don’t post it.
- Be respectful online, some people may have different opinions to you and that’s okay. You do not need to comment or reply to them.
- Don’t react, report troll-like or bullying behaviour instead of replying to them.
- Give yourself a ‘rule’ about who you connect with on social media, and who you do not. For example, if you would stop and say hi to them on the street, you will add them as a Facebook friend. This helps to create boundaries in the online world.
