The NDIS Review Panel have heard lots of stories from people with disability. They have learned about the challenges that many people with disability have experienced with the NDIS.
The NDIS Review Panel has written a Report about everything they have heard.
The Report talks about 10 important issues:
- The planning process is hard and stressful for participants.
- Support for people with disability is not funded or managed as a whole.
- Many people do not understand what reasonable and necessary means.
- Children and their families do not get the support they need to reach their goals and be part of the community.
- NDIS markets are not working and many participants cannot find services they need.
- The goals and outcomes of the NDIS are not clear.
- We need better ways to check how NDIS funding helps people reach their goals.
- The roles of different support people are confusing. For example, plan managers and support coordinators.
- Many participants do not have much choice about where or how they live. New funding has not made housing choices better.
- Lots of systems need to work together to make sure people with disability are safe and get good supports.
The Report also asks some questions, like:
- How can we make sure people who are not on the NDIS also have support? What support should be available?
- How can we make sure that everyone understands what ‘reasonable and necessary’ means? What should it mean?
- How can we make sure that decisions about funding are fair?
- What is the best way to support children with disability and their families?
- How can disability services work better?
- What would help when supports and services are not available where you live?
- How can we make sure the NDIS lasts for a long time?
- How can the NDIS make the planning process better?
- How can we make sure the government and agencies do what they say they will do to support you?
- What kind of support would you like to navigate the NDIS? What skills does a person need to have to help you?
- How should housing and living options be improved? What do you need to feel safe and supported in your home?
- What should the NDIS do to make sure you have choice and control in how you use your funding, and that you are safe?
- How can the government stop harm and make sure the support you receive is good quality?
- How can the NDIS make sure no one restricts your rights?
